Economic conditions were improving across the U.S. by the end of 2012, although some metro areas were recovering faster than others, according to a new index of 2012 data released Thursday by the Brookings Institution.

By the end of the year, 78 of 100 large metropolitan areas had recorded job gains, while employment in an average large metro area rose by about 0.4%, Brookings Institution researchers found. Similarly, housing prices had recovered somewhat in 85 of 100 metro areas, with Florida, California and the Mountain West areas posting the strongest gains.
